Sophrology
What is sophrology?
Sophrology was developed by a Spanish neuro-psychiatrist Dr Alfonso
Caycedo in the 1960s. It is a technique that is simple and
easy to learn. Based on relaxation and concentration it helps you
to become more aware of your body and mind and the way they both
function.
Derived from the Greek words SOS (harmony, serenity), PHREN (consciousness)
and LOGOS (science, study), sophrology aims to help you live more
consciously with your body and mind in harmony.
Guided by the sophrologist, you learn how to relax your entire
body and reach a state of deep relaxation. From that state of consciousness,
specific techniques are chosen to address your specific needs.
What can be treated with sophrology?
- Stress management: identifying and eliminating tensions, developing
a better awareness of the factors that create stress in you and
of your reactions to them at an early stage to enable you to manage
them better.
- Preparation for a forthcoming event: becoming more confident
and positive for exams, interviews, childbirth, surgery.
- Self-development: being more aware and developing inner resources,
strengths and personal values.
- Sophrology is also effective with children: helping them to
control anxiety, lack of concentration, improving confidence and
motivation.
Our Sophrologist
What is a typical session?
A typical session lasts about one hour: it starts with a dialogue
with the sophrologist to assess your specific needs and thus tailor
the session to them. Then the session itself lasts 15-20 minutes:
the sophrologist invites you to relax completely. With his/her voice,
he/she guides you throughout the session to help you identify and
then eliminate your tensions, activate your energies, project yourself
in various situations etc
The session is audio-taped so that
you can practise at home on your own. Four to five sessions are
needed to master the basic techniques. The more you train, the more
efficient the techniques become. The ultimate aim is to develop
your skills so that you can use these techniques on your own whenever
needed in your daily life.
