Sophrology
What is sophrology?
Developed by a Spanish neuro-psychiatrist Dr Alfonso Caycedo in the 1960’s, Sophrology is a technique that is simple and easy to learn. Derived from the Greek words SOS (harmony, serenity), PHREN (consciousness) and LOGOS (science, study), Sophrology aims to help you live more consciously with your body and mind in harmony. Well-known in France, Belgium, Switzerland and Spain, Sophrology is quickly becoming more and more popular in the UK.
Based on relaxation and concentration, including both physical and mental exercises, which are done in a state of dynamic relaxation (relaxation in movement), Sophrology helps us to take a more active part in our lives and to enable us to live each day with more awareness. With Sophrology, you learn how to relax, to respond more selectively to stressful events, to be more aware of your inner resources, strengths and personal values.
What can be treated with Sophrology?
- Stress management: help with all stress related symptoms (back pain, anxiety, insomnia, IBS, phobia...).
- You will learn how to relax, identify and release tensions; develop a better awareness of the factors that create stress in you and of your reactions to them at an early stage enabling you to manage them better.
- Preparation for a forthcoming event: become more confident and positive for exams, interviews, childbirth, surgery.
- Addiction: specific techniques to help you quit smoking.
- Self-development: be more aware and developing inner resources, strengths and personal values.
- Sophrology is also effective with children, helping them to control anxiety, lack of concentration, improving confidence and motivation.
Our Sophrologist
What is a typical session?
A typical session lasts about one hour: it starts with a dialogue with the Sophrologist to assess your specific needs and thus tailor the session to them. Then the session itself lasts 15-20 minutes: the Sophrologist invites you to relax completely. With his/her voice, they will guide you throughout the session to help you identify and then release your tensions, activate your energies, project yourself in various situations etc… The session is audio-recorded so that you can practise at home on your own. Four to five sessions are needed to master the basic techniques. The more you train, the more efficient the techniques become. The ultimate aim is to develop your skills so that you can use these techniques on your own whenever needed in your daily life.
